Interesting article about open source PBX systems reaching 18% market share

No Jitter reported about an extensive study looking at a shift in the PBX market in North America towards open source solutions. According to this report the market for open source solutions became a lot more main stream as solutions matured. According to the study 75% of open source PBX deployments are for companies with less than 50 employees and with under 10 locations. We predict that a shift towards larger enterprises with more branch locations will accelerate. We see some of the same verticals mentioned in the study, namely education, government, retail, insurance and manufacturing, express increasing interest in open source solutions that scale. SIPfoundry positioned its solution for some time into the category of users that are more mainstream and look for a scalable and centrally managed PBX and unified communications solution that scales to many branch offices. It's going to be interesting how this all will end up.

Open source PBX market share

What really got me looking at this is this graph. The majority of open source PBXs deployed today are obviously based on Asterisk and we all know how much talk there is about the scalability of the Asterisk solution. I sat on panels at trade shows many times listening to my co-presenters talk about companies with thousands of users that have transitioned to an Asterisk based IP PBX solution. According to this study none of this is true. And of course all those who worked with these kind of technologies know that the chart is correct: Asterisk deployments do not scale and that is why 96% of all systems are smaller than 500 users and 75% are smaller than 50 users.
